Foreign Minister: Suspending Oil Exports to N. Korea Being Discussed at UN

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says a suspension of crude oil exports to North Korea is being considered as a major part of new international sanctions in response to Pyongyang's sixth nuclear test.

Kang told the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on Tuesday that a crude oil ban is “one of the important elements” being discussed by the UN Security Council(UNSC), but added that it needs to be seen how exactly it will be reflected in a new resolution.

Kang emphasized the international community’s serious response to the North’s nuclear test, citing the emergency UNSC meeting held on Monday hours after the provocation.

She also pointed out that the U.S. wasted no time entering negotiations with other Security Council members on new sanctions, instead of following routine protocol to draw on the UNSC president’s statement denouncing the North's move.

Kang stressed that Seoul is working together with other major countries to adopt a fresh UNSC resolution containing additional sanctions on North Korea as soon as possible.
