N. Korea Warns of 'More Gift Packages' for US

Anchor: A ranking North Korean diplomat has warned that his country is ready to send "more gift packages" to the U.S. in response to growing pressure from Washington and the UN Security Council.
Alannah Hill has more.

Report: Han Tae-song, North Korean ambassador to the UN in Geneva, issued the warning on Tuesday during the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament two days after his country conducted its sixth nuclear test.

Noting pride over the North's latest and biggest nuclear test, Han said the measure was a gift for the U.S.

“I am proud of saying that just two days ago on the third of September, DPRK successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test for intercontinental ballistic rocket under its plan for building a strategic nuclear force.”
“The recent self-defense measures by my country, DPRK, are a ‘gift package’ addressed to none other than the U.S..”

The North Korean envoy then warned that the U.S. will receive more "gift packages" from his country as long as it piles on more pressure or sanctions, while reaffirming that Pyongyang would never put its nuclear deterrence on the negotiating table.

U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood borrowed the gift package analogy to denounce the North's provocations. He recommended that the North give its people the gift package of peace with their neighbors and economic development rather than spending inordinate amounts of money on nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Han's tirade comes as South Korea and the U.S. are seeking tougher UN Security Council(UNSC) sanctions against North Korea, including a halt to oil supplies to the North and a ban on its exportation of laborers.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry also criticized the UNSC on Tuesday. According to the North's official Korean Central News Agency, the ministry said it would be a great miscalculation if the U.S. believes it could surprise or change North Korea by imposing sanctions and pressure in the areas of politics, economy or military.
