Asahi: N. Korean Leader Has $3-5Bln Stashed Away Abroad

A leading Japanese daily says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has stashed up to five billion dollars in secret funds overseas.

The Asahi Shimbun quoted Cho Bong-hyun, a researcher at the Industrial Bank of Korea, as saying on Friday that between three and five billion dollars in so-called revolutionary money used by Kim has been stashed away in borrowed name accounts in foreign financial institutions.

The daily said that the secret funds are being concealed in foreign institutions in Switzerland, Hong Kong and Middle Eastern countries.

The report said the North Korean leader spends the money buying luxury items, including electronic products and fancy watches that are given out as awards to top officials who yield achievements. The daily said that it is believed that some of the money is being used for the development of missiles and nuclear weapons.
