UN Chief Expresses Deep Concern over N. Korea
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the dispute over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs is the world’s worst crisis “in years.”
The UN chief expressed his deep concern over the North Korean issue during an interview published Sunday by the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.
Guterres said that in the past, wars had been initiated after a well thought-out decision, but there were also conflicts that started through an escalation caused by sleepwalking.
Guterres stressed the importance of maintaining the unity of the UN Security Council at all costs, saying that it is the only tool that can carry out a diplomatic initiative with a chance of success.
The U.S. plans to push for a vote at the UN Security Council on Monday on a new resolution to impose severe new sanctions on North Korea, despite resistance from China and Russia.
