Moon Opposes Nuclear Armament of S. Korea

President Moon Jae-in is opposed to arming South Korea with nuclear weapons in the face of North Korean nuclear threats.

Moon made his stance clear during an interview with CNN in Seoul on Thursday, saying he does not agree with calls within the country that it should develop its own nuclear weapons or redeploy U.S. tactical nuclear weapons in response to the North's provocations.

Moon argued that keeping the North’s nuclear threats in check by owning nuclear weapons will not guarantee peace on the Korean Peninsula, adding it could trigger a domino effect and spark a nuclear arms race in Northeast Asia.

Still, Moon said South Korea needs to strengthen its military forces to deal with the North’s quickening pace of nuclear development.
