Top Office: Humanitarian Assistance Policy for N. Korea Unchanged

The top office confirmed a Unification Ministry briefing on Friday that humanitarian assistance to North Korea will proceed regardless of Pyongyang’s missile launch on Friday.

Following the launch, a presidential official told reporters that it is possible to provide humanitarian assistance while retaining a firm stance against Pyongyang's nuclear and missile provocations.

The Unification Ministry said earlier Friday that it is the government’s stance to continue humanitarian assistance for the vulnerable in the North.

On Thursday, the government announced plans to review allocating four-point-five million dollars to the World Food Programme's nutritional programs for children and expectant mothers, and three-point-five million dollars toward funding UNICEF's vaccinations, essential medicine and treatments.

If executed, it will be the Moon administration's first dispatch of aid to North Korea. It will also be Seoul's first aid to the North through an international organization in 21 months.
