Japan Seeks to Strengthen Missile Interceptor Ability over Hokkaido

Japan reportedly plans to additionally deploy a PAC-3 interceptor to Hokkaido after a series of North Korea’s ballistic missiles flew over the country’s northern island.
The Mainichi Shimbun on Monday quoted a Tokyo official as saying that the Japanese Defense Ministry is planning to deploy a Patriot Advanced Capability-3(PAC-3) missile of the Japan Air Self Defense Force(JASDF) to the southern Hokkaido city of Hakodate, adding it could be deployed as early as Tuesday.
The two latest North Korean intermediate-range ballistic missiles, launched on August 29th and last Friday, passed through the sky of the Cape of Erimo, the southernmost part of Hokkaido, before falling into the Pacific Ocean.
The JASDF has currently deployed 34 patriot missiles across Japan, but only a few of them have been in place in Hokkaido, drawing concerns from the residents.
