The Unification Ministry plans to produce a set of lasting principles on North Korea policies by 2021.

A ministry official told reporters on Tuesday that the so-called national pact on unification is one of 100 goals set forth by President Moon Jae-in's administration that it plans to reach one year before his five-year term ends.

The official said the government will take a “bottom-up” approach for the project, first setting up a preparatory council this year to collect opinions from the government, political parties and citizens, before launching a full-pledged committee.

When established, the government expects the pact will ensure continuity in the country’s North Korea policy without being influenced by any government's political affiliations.
