Moon Calls for Cooperation on N. Korean Issue at UN Debut

Anchor: President Moon Jae-in held a slew of summit meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, urging world leaders for cooperation in handling North Korea’s nuclear issue. He also met International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and asked for cooperation in hosting a successful winter games.

Report: President Moon Jae-in focused on securing support for the full implementation of UN Security Council(UNSC) sanctions against North Korea and boosting interest in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics at his UN debut. 

First on Tuesday, Moon held a summit with British Prime Minister Theresa May. Moon expressed gratitude to May for Britain’s efforts in resolving the North’s nuclear issue and supporting the adoption of sanctions against the North.
 
May stressed the need for the international community to take concerted measures, calling North Korean nuclear and missile provocations a grave threat to peace not only in Northeast Asia but the entire world.

In a meeting with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, Moon discussed the possible participation of North Korea in the PyeongChang Olympics.

"If the world can make the PyeongChang Olympics a success, we will be able to clear away security concerns and achieve safety, peace and reconciliation in the region." 

Meeting Czech Republic President Miloš Zeman, Moon urged cooperation in addressing Pyongyang’s nuclear threats and in Pyeongchang hosting a successful Olympics.
 
Moon also held a summit with Senegalese President Macky Sall and discussed ways to boost bilateral ties. Moon thanked the Senegalese leader for supporting South Korea’s stance in the international arena as a nonpermanent member of the UNSC.
