Gov't Decides to Provide $8 Mln Aid to N. Korea, but Timing Not Set
The government has decided to provide eight million dollars in aid to North Korea via UN organizations.
The timing of the assistance, however, has not been set as the government plans to take into account current inter-Korean relations.
The government reached the decision on Thursday during an inter-Korean exchange committee meeting chaired by Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon.
The meeting was organized at the request of UNICEF and the World Food Programme(WFP).
The aid will go toward the WFP’s nutritional programs for children and expectant mothers as well as UNICEF's vaccinations, essential medicine and treatments targeting children and pregnant women.
The Unification Ministry explained that the latest decision is in accordance with the government’s basic stance that it separates the issue of humanitarian aid for the North with political situations.
The hold on aid comes after controversy over the appropriateness of providing assistance at a time when the North is engaging in nuclear and missile provocations.
