Seoul Challenges Japanese Reports of Conflict over N. Korea Humanitarian Aid

South Korea's presidential office has refuted Japanese media reports that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed anger over Seoul’s plan to provide humanitarian aid to North Korea during a trilateral summit in New York.

In a media briefing Friday, Cheong Wa Dae press secretary Yoon Young-chan challenged Japanese reports released earlier in the day about the three-way meeting involving Trump, President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday.

Yoon denied claims that Trump and Abe spoke negatively about the Seoul government's decision to provide eight-million U.S. dollars worth of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable North Koreans.

The press secretary also questioned the validity of a quote from an Abe aide who was cited as saying Trump “got quite angry” about the matter, since a South Korean official who was present during the summit said the claims are groundless and not true at all.

Yoon emphasized that under diplomatic protocol, media outlets should refrain from reporting beyond officially briefed contents when it comes to a summit meeting.

He said the South Korean government finds it regrettable that Japanese media outlets are reporting groundless claims quoting Japanese government sources, and hopes it will not happen again.
