Unification Ministry Panel Discuss Improving N. Korean Human Rights

The Unification Ministry and its advisory committee have discussed measures to help enhance human rights in North Korea.

Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung attended the first meeting of the ministry’s advisory committee on the promotion of North Korean human rights on Friday.

During the closed-door session, participants were known to have talked about details of the projects being carried out this year to help address the North Korean human rights issue. Among the projects are the establishment of the North Korea Human Rights Foundation and provision of humanitarian aid for North Koreans through international organizations.

Under the North Korean Human Rights Act, the ministry is required to report basic human rights enhancement plans and execution plans to the National Assembly every year. The basic plans were reported to parliament in April.

The execution plans are yet to be reported but a ministry official said they will be sent to parliament sometime before or after the Chuseok holiday.
