US State Dept: New N. Korea Sanctions Will be Effective

A senior U.S. State Department official has said the new sanctions against North Korea unveiled by the U.S. Treasury Department will have a considerable impact.

In a briefing in New York on Friday, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton said the latest measures are the last chance to resolve the North Korean issue in a peaceful manner.

She said she does not want to speculate about Pyongyang's fresh threat to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean, calling it an "unprecedented act of aggression." She said there will be a very concerted and determined international response to such action.

Thornton also argued that North Korea's behavior implies the regime is feeling strong pressure from the recent series of global sanctions.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order targeting firms and individuals doing business with North Korea on Thursday.
