Seoul Aware of US Bomber Deployment off N. Korean Coast

Anchor: In response to escalating tension, the U.S. deployed B-1B Lancer bombers and fighter jets off the coast of North Korea over the weekend. Although speculation has arisen that Seoul had not been informed prior to the deployment, the top office insists that is not the case.
Kim Soyon has more.

Report: The back-and-forth of insults between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un intensified a notch over the weekend as U.S. bombers and fighter jets flew in international airspace off North Korea's eastern coast in a show of force.

According to the Pentagon, the deployment of B-1B Lancer bombers and fighter jets in international airspace off North Korea from late Saturday to early Sunday was the farthest north of the Demilitarized Zone any U.S. aircraft have flown in the 21st century.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the flights were a demonstration of U.S. resolve and a clear message that Trump has many military options to defeat any threat from North Korea.

Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said that the United States is prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the U.S. homeland and its allies.

President Moon Jae-in convened a full session of the National Security Council on Sunday, leading to speculation that Seoul hadn’t been consulted on the show of force.

However, the top office said Monday that Seoul and Washington had agreed on the deployment.

A presidential official told reporters that Moon had been briefed of the move during his trip to New York and that the two governments had discussed it in detail.

The official said the NSC meeting had been scheduled from last week, explaining that past NSC meetings were held in response to the North’s missile tests, but the president had expressed a need for meetings that review and analyze measures in advance.
