UN Chief: Escalating Rhetoric Raises Risk of Misunderstandings

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concerns over the U.S. and North Korea trading angry words, saying the worse such wranglings get, the higher the risk of misunderstandings become.
According to foreign media, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed Guterres’ concerns shortly after North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho said in a news conference in New York on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump had declared war on North Korea.
Dujarric said “fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings.”
Reuters said that China’s Ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi, shared such concerns, saying that the exchange of harsh words between Washington and Pyongyang are “getting too dangerous and it’s in nobody’s interest.” He expressed hopes that the U.S. and the North “will see that there is no other way than negotiations to solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula." He added that “the alternative is a disaster.”
