McMaster: Inspections Should Precede Talks with N. Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump's top security adviser has said that North Korea must accept an inspection of its nuclear facilities and declare that it is willing to abandon its nuclear weapons before Washington can begin negotiations.

According to Bloomberg, National Security Adviser Herbert McMaster made the remark in a speech at a conference hosted by the Institute for the Study of War in Washington on Monday.

Regarding heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula over the recent escalation in rhetoric between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, McMaster said the U.S. wants to avoid war with the North but cannot discount that possibility.

He said it would be “unacceptable” for the North to achieve a ballistic missile tipped with a nuclear warhead and that the Trump administration has planned out four to five scenarios in which the North Korean nuclear threat is resolved, adding that “some are uglier than others.”
