Moon: Public Safety, Peaceful Management of Situation Is Priority

President Moon Jae-in says the government will work with the international community to prevent tensions on the Korean Peninsula from rising further.

Moon made the remark Tuesday in a congratulatory speech at a Seoul event to mark the tenth anniversary of the second inter-Korean summit, stressing the safety of the South Korean public and peaceful management of the current geopolitical situation are Seoul’s top priority.

Moon said Seoul will also cooperate with other countries to prevent a military clash on the Korean Peninsula.

Pointing out that the South will not tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea, the president said Seoul will make Pyongyang realize it will have no future if it confronts the rest of the world with nuclear weapons.

Moon said the international community has reached the consensus that it needs to strengthen sanctions and pressure on the North until it abandons its weapons programs.

He also emphasized Seoul’s policy to seek a peaceful solution to the North Korean nuclear issue, saying the journey to peace and prosperity in the region should not stop in spite of any obstacles.

The event marking the October fourth, 2007 joint declaration between then South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was moved up from next Wednesday due to the extended Chuseok holiday.
