China Resumes Coal Imports from N. Korea

China has resumed coal imports from North Korea five months after it imposed a ban.

Data from China's General Administration of Customs on Tuesday showed that China imported one-point-six million tons of coal from North Korea in August, the first time since February 19th when Beijing prohibited purchases of the fuel from its ally.

The volume of coal imports in August was similar to the monthly average for the six months before the ban, raising questions about China's implementation of UN sanctions against North Korea.

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2321 in November last year over the North's fifth nuclear test, targeting its coal exports. The Chinese government had banned coal imports from Pyongyang in line with the resolution.
