US: Sanctions Aimed at Blocking Funds for N. Korea's Nuke Program

The U.S. State Department says that Washington’s diplomatic and economic sanctions against North Korea are aimed at blocking funds flowing into the North’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and these efforts will contribute to the North’s denuclearization.

Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters on Tuesday that the latest U.S. sanctions against eight North Korean banks was part of its peaceful pressure campaign, which shows Washington has various options for North Korea.

Regarding President Donald Trump’s strong words on his Twitter against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the spokeswoman said that the president is an effective communicator.

When asked if Otto Warmbier was tortured by North Korea as Trump tweeted, Nauert simply responded that North Korea does not care about rule of law or human rights at all.

Trump on Tuesday tweeted that “Otto was tortured beyond belief by North Korea.”
