Top Office Denies US Strategic Assets to be Deployed from Year's End

The presidential office said Thursday that there were no discussions with the U.S. about deploying U.S. strategic military assets on the Korean Peninsula from the end of this year.

A senior official of the top office told reporters that Seoul is closely consulting on the matter with Washington, adding that the deployment of assets will come in line with the consultations.

The official said the deployment could come earlier or later than the end of this year, adding that right now the two sides are actively discussing the issue.

Earlier on Wednesday, Chung Eui-young, the chief of the National Security Office, had said that the U.S. promised to deploy its strategic military assets around the peninsula from the end of this year, at the earliest.
