US Notes China's Policy Shift on N. Korea

A senior U.S. official says that China is seen to be changing its policy on North Korea, noting that Beijing is making progress in enforcing sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton gave the assessment on Thursday during a Senate hearing just before leaving for China with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Thornton said that the success of this pressure strategy will depend on cooperation from international partners, especially Beijing.
She added Washington is working closely with China to execute this strategy and witnessing China making progress, urging the U.S. Congress not to rush to enact new sanctions before giving Beijing’s efforts a chance to take effect.
The official also noted that China recently took additional measures to restrict trade with North Korea in line with UN sanctions.
