Trump Stokes Fears of War against N. Korea, Iran

Anchor:  Reporters and analysts are doing their best to interpret off-the-cuff statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump after a meeting with his top military generals.  Some see the president's comments as an indication that he is looking ever more closely at a military solution to the North Korean nuclear issue.

Report: President Donald Trump was lined up shoulder to shoulder with his top military leaders for a photo opportunity at the White House Thursday.

The group had just had a strategy meeting on North Korea, Iran, and other issues.

The U.S. president then mystified reporters with remarks that appeared to be unscripted.

"You guys know what this represents?... Maybe it's the calm before the storm," (Reporter: What's the storm?)
"Could be the calm before the storm. We have the world's great military people here in this room I will tell you that, and we're going to have a great evening, thank you all for coming."

"You'll find out."

The remarks follow a number of suggestions by the U.S. president in recent weeks that he is prepared to use military force to halt North Korea's nuclear weapons advancement.

At Thursday's meeting, Trump urged his generals to provide him with possible options for accomplishing that and other strategic aims.

"In North Korea, our goal is denuclearization. We cannot allow this dictatorship to threaten our nation or our allies with unimaginable loss of life. We will do what we must do to prevent that from happening. And it will be done if necessary, believe me... "
"Moving forward I also expect you to provide me with a broad range of military options when needed at a much faster pace. I know that government bureaucracy is slow but I am depending on you to overcome the obstacles of bureaucracy."

Trump said that the U.S. should have taken care of issues of North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan and ISIS a long time ago, saying they threaten American interests around the globe.

During his speech to the UN General Assembly last month, Trump said the U.S. would “totally destroy” North Korea if necessary in defending the U.S. and its allies.

In August, Trump vowed to "unleash fire and fury like the world has never seen” against North Korea if it threatens his country.

And earlier this week, the American president's Twitter posts stirred another round of controversy as he told his secretary of state not to waste his time trying to negotiate with "Little Rocket Man," his nickname for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
