USFK: Maximum Detection Range of THAAD Radar in S. Korea 1,000 km

U.S. Forces Korea(USFK) says the maximum detection range of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) system deployed in South Korea is one-thousand kilometers.

That's according to Strategic Digest 2017, which is a booklet introducing USFK on its Web site.

On the section on THAAD, a missile defense battery, the booklet says detection, threat classification, and threat identification of incoming missiles is provided by X-band ground-based radar, which can detect missile threats at ranges up to one-thousand kilometers.

A Seoul-based news agency said the X-band radar used with a THAAD battery has two configurations: Terminal Mode(TM) and Forward-Based Mode(FBM). The X-band radar deployed in Seongju, South Korea, has the shorter range TM configuration.

Citing military experts, the agency said that in the TM mode, the radar has an optimum detection range of 600 to 800 kilometers, only adequate to cover North Korea, and cannot look deeply into China.
