NATO Chief Warns Against War with N. Korea

The secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO) has warned against any war with North Korea.

The chief of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Friday that military action against North Korea could trigger "devastating consequences."

In an interview with AFP news agency held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, the secretary general said the "use of military force will have devastating consequences and we need to continue to push for a negotiated solution."

AFP said that his call for a diplomatic solution to the Korean Peninsula crisis is in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's remark that diplomatic efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue have failed.

The NATO chief said the U.S. has the right to defend itself and its allies but at the same time, he is absolutely certain no one wants a military solution.

He said there is still a united effort to try to step up pressure against North Korea.

Stoltenberg's remarks come before his visit to South Korea and Japan in the coming weeks.
