Gov't to Convey to N. Korea S. Korean Firms' Wish to Visit Gaeseong

The Unification Ministry is said to be planning to convey to North Korea as early as this week the wish of South Korean firms that had operated in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex to visit the North.

The companies are seeking the visit to confirm whether the North restarted operations of their facilities.

An official said Monday that the ministry is mulling how to convey the companies’ wish to the reclusive state.

The government believes that ahead of giving an answer to the South Korean firms’ request, it must first confirm whether or not the North agrees to the visit.

Earlier on October eighth, the North’s propaganda Web site, DPRK Today, claimed that the Gaeseong park clearly falls under the area where the North exercises its sovereignty. The report then denounced the South Korean government, saying it had lost its right to say anything about the joint venture a long time ago.

Last Thursday, roughly 40 employees of South Korean firms that had operated in the Gaeseong complex requested the government to be allowed to visit the North.

However, there is virtually no way for Seoul to convey the South Korean firms’ stance to the North other than through the North checking out the government’s position via South Korean media as all South-North communication channels have been severed.
