A senior North Korean official handling relations with Washington is in Russia for an international conference on nuclear nonproliferation.
 
Choe Son-hui, director general of the North American affairs bureau at Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry, arrived in Moscow on Tuesday ahead of the Moscow Nonproliferation Conference to kick off on Thursday.
 
During the three-day conference, Choe is scheduled to participate in the discussions on the security of Northeast Asia and multilateral diplomacy aimed to ease tension on the Korean Peninsula.
 
Unofficial talks may be arranged between Choe and the U.S. delegation consisting of former Washington officials, including former Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
 
The South Korean government is also known to be considering sending Foreign Ministry officials to the conference, raising the possibility of an inter-Korean meeting in Russia.
