Assembly Speaker Meets Polish President in Warsaw

National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun met with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Poland on Wednesday.

The meeting held at the presidential palace in Warsaw addressed North Korea as well as economic and cultural cooperation between South Korea and Poland.

During the talks, speaker Chung said that Seoul firmly believes the North Korean nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and compromise.

He said Seoul supports measures taken by the global community against Pyongyang's unilateral provocations but stressed that war must be prevented at all cost.

Chung expressed hope that UN sanctions will be properly implemented to bring North Korea to the negotiating table to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and peace in Northeast Asia.

President Duda said he totally agrees with the view that sanctions are not to rebuke the North but to induce the regime toward dialogue.

Duda said he recently read an article about North Korean defectors and thought that global sanctions are effective and the North's regime could possibly collapse in the next year.
