S. Korea, France Agree on Strong Sanctions, Pressure on N. Korea

The foreign ministers of South Korea and France have agreed on the need for strong sanctions and pressure against North Korea to lead the country to talks on denuclearization.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and her French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian announced the agreement on Monday in a joint press briefing after their talks in Paris.

Kang said that the two sides agreed that North Korea's repeated provocations and advances in its nuclear capability are the "most urgent and significant threat" to security around the world.

"The nuclear threat from North Korea is very serious and the nuclear missile capacity of North Korea is speeding up, as the minister said, and it is not just South Korea's problem but as the minister said quite rightly it is also the most serious threat to the security of the international community.

She added that strong sanctions and pressure are needed for North Korea to come to the negotiating table.

The French foreign minister said that the talks with Kang mostly focused on the importance of thorough implementation of UN Security Council resolutions in relation to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula and the North's denuclearization.
