S. Korea's Weather Chief Warns Of Radioactive Leaks from N. Korea Nuclear Facility

The head of South Korea’s national weather agency has warned of a potential disaster and radioactive leak if North Korea conducts another test at its nuclear test site, echoing a recent report from Beijing.

Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) chief Nam Jae-cheol assessed the situation during a parliamentary inspection on Monday. Representative Ha Tae-keung of the opposition Bareun Party asked Nam about the warning issued by Chinese scientists regarding the stability of the North's test site.

Nam said another nuclear test could collapse the Punggye-ri facility. He also cited data and satellite imagery, adding that if the site implodes, radioactive waste could spread across the North's borders.

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post newspaper reported on Saturday that researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Geology and Geophysics briefed a North Korean delegation in Beijing last month on the threat of an implosion at the Punggye-ri nuclear facility.
