10 N. Korean Defectors in China Face Deportation

A group of ten North Korean defectors face possible deportation after being arrested by Chinese police last week.

The South Korean Consulate General in Shenyang said Sunday that a North Korean defector living in South Korea filed a report with the consulate about the arrest.

The North Korean defectors, including a three-year-old child, were reportedly arrested by Chinese police at a house in Shenyang on Saturday, along with an assistance worker who helped arrange their defection from North Korea. They were planning on traveling to South Korea.

The defectors' family, who already escaped the North and settled in South Korea, asked the consulate general to help release the defectors, saying that they will face execution if deported.

The consulate general requested the Chinese police to look into the case and handle it from a humanitarian perspective.
