NATO: Pressure Needed on N. Korea to Reach Peaceful Solution

NATO convened a defense ministers' meeting at its headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday and went over pending issues, including ways to respond to North Korea’s nuclear threat.

It is unprecedented for NATO, which handles security issues concerning Europe and North America, to discuss the North’s nuclear issue as a key topic in its defense ministers’ meeting.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in a news conference that all NATO allies agree on the need to put strong pressure on North Korea because it is responsible for reckless and irresponsible behavior by developing nuclear weapons and missiles.

He said that “pressure is the path to peace” as he stressed the need to apply pressure on Pyongyang to reach a peaceful negotiated solution.

The two-day meeting will also discuss ways to strengthen support toward Afghanistan and expand command centers in Europe amid tension with Russia.
