N. Korea, Russia Agree to Strengthen Cooperation on Rhajin-Khasan Project

North Korea and Russia have discussed measures to strengthen their economic cooperation using a cross-border railway between the two countries.

The Russian Embassy in Pyongyang said in a Facebook post that Ambassador Alexander Matsegora and North Korean deputy minister of railways Kim Yun-hyok met in Pyongyang on Tuesday to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation regarding the transportation of Russian coal exports through the North’s Rajin port.

According to the Russian embassy, the two sides agreed to eliminate stumbling blocks to expanding transportation of Russian cargoes via the Rajin-Khasan railway and Rajin port.

The Khasan-Rajin railway, connecting the North Korean port of Rajin with the Russian city of Khasan, was refurbished between 2008 and 2014 and Russia has been exporting Siberian coal to China via Rajin port.
