'Japan to be Alert of N. Korean Spies Posing as Refugees During Contingency'

A Japanese daily reports Japan will step up immigration checks based on the belief that North Korea could send spies disguised as refugees during a contingency situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The Yomiuri Shimbun said Thursday that the Japanese government will set up a temporary refugee camp in Kyushu and form an immigration inspection squad, including police officers, to ferret out dangerous figures and have them expelled.

Japan believes that if the U.S. launches an attack on North Korea, tens of thousands of North Korean residents will come over to Japan on wooden boats.

Tokyo is concerned that during this time, North Korean agents or terrorists could disguise themselves as refugees, infiltrate into the country and launch terror attacks on nuclear power plants or facilities belonging to the Japan Self-Defense Forces or U.S. troops stationed in Japan.

The Japanese government plans to have North Koreans who are allowed to enter Japan first stay at a tentative facility and later determine whether to approve their residence in Japan after a certain of period of time.

The Yomiuri report says Japan will set up a separate facility for South Korean refugees.
