Pentagon Nominee Stresses Diplomacy on N. Korea

The nominee for the U.S. Pentagon's top official for Asia says that the North Korean nuclear issue should be resolved through diplomacy.

Randall Schriver, nominee for assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific affairs, stressed diplomacy on Thursday during his confirmation hearing at the Senate Armed Services Committee

Schriver said that diplomacy is the only way to avoid war on the Korean Peninsula, adding that the U.S. needs to get out of that binary trap of either going to war and having military conflict or treating North Korea as a recognized nuclear state.

The nominee said that the only way to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue is through diplomacy.

However, he pointed out that Pyongyang has been reluctant to calls for dialogue, saying that the U.S. needs a willing partner on the other side.

He said that the Trump administration's current policy of putting maximum pressure and sanctions on Pyongyang helps create an environment conducive to dialogue.
