Top Defense Nominee: War with N. Korea Impossible Without S. Korea's Consent

The nominee for the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific affairs says it would be virtually impossible for the U.S. to go to war with North Korea without the clear consent of South Korea.

Radio Free Asia(RFA) said Friday that Randall Schriver made the remark in a reply to advance policy questions presented by the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

In the reply, Schriver said that even though he thinks “it would be theoretically possible to initiate a conflict with North Korea without the express consent of South Korea and Japan, this approach would be flawed and dangerous.”

He added that it would be impossible to sustain U.S. military action without the support of the governments of South Korea and Japan as the U.S. cannot use its bases there and coordinate with their militaries.

The nominee said that “although the U.S. military is the most capable fighting force the world has ever seen, cooperation and collaboration with South Korea and Japan is essential.”
