Nuke Envoys of S. Korea, US Discuss N.Korea's Denuclearization

The top nuclear envoys of South Korea and the U.S. have discussed follow-up measures to advance the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that South Korea's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs Lee Do-hoon and his U.S. counterpart Joseph Yun focused on finding a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear issue as agreed upon by President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to the ministry, Lee and Yun shared their assessment on the progress of North Korea-related issues and had in-depth talks on how to stably manage the situation. They also discussed ways to bring Pyongyang to the dialogue table through diplomatic efforts, including sanctions and pressure.

The ministry said the duo also noted constructive roles by countries such as China and Russia in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue, and agreed to strengthen strategic communication with other related parties based on close coordination between South Korea and the U.S.

The ministry said the envoys plan to hold further talks in the near future.
