Seoul Approves Inter-Korean Trip for Son of High-Profile S. Korean Defector

The government has approved the son of the late chairwoman of the North Korean Chondoist Chongu Party to travel to North Korea.
A Unification Ministry official said Monday that Seoul approved the cross-border trip on humanitarian grounds as the son seeks to attend a first anniversary event for his late mother in the North.
The South Korean citizen’s mother Ryu Mi-yong led the government-approved traditional religious movement in North Korea, which was also established as a minor political party.
Ryu and her husband, former South Korean foreign minister Choe Tok-sin, defected to the North in 1986.
Identified only by his last name, the son recently requested the travel permit following an invitation from the North to attend the commemoration event.
He plans to arrive in Pyongyang on Wednesday via China and attend the memorial service for his mother on Thursday. He will return home on Saturday. The Unification Ministry had also allowed him to go to the North last November when his mother died.
