VOA: Most N. Korean Oil Tankers Stopped Operating Around July

The Voice of America(VOA) is reporting that most North Korean oil tankers appear to have stopped operating from around July.

Quoting Marine Traffic, a Web site that displays real-time positions of ships worldwide, VOA said most North Korean tankers have shown no movements in the past four months.

The U.S. international broadcaster said that up until June, North Korean oil tankers had traveled to and from Vladivostok, Russia and Dalian, China at least once a week or once a month.

VOA said the movement of roughly 20 North Korean oil tankers has been detected this year. Out of those ships, only two were last seen in Chinese waters this month.

It said the sharp drop in the North Korean ships’ operations may be linked to cuts in the North’s oil supply.

The report also cited some observers’ speculation the North Korean tankers might be sailing with their Automatic Identification System turned off.
