Expert: N. Korean ICBM Could Carry Decoys to Confuse US THAAD System
A leading missile expert says that the advanced intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM) unveiled by North Korea last week is capable of reaching any major U.S. city and may be able to disguise itself en route to its final destination.
Michael Elleman, the senior fellow for missile defense at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, told Fox News on Monday that the Hwasong-15 rocket could be equipped to carry decoys in a bid to evade U.S. missile interceptors such as the THAAD.
Elleman said that one of the unfortunate implications of the recent test is that because the missile is so much larger in size it has the capacity to carry decoys that would increase the probability that it could evade the THAAD system.
The expert said that it's uncertain whether North Korea has tested decoys or countermeasures, but it has throw-weight to carry simple decoys.
Elleman added that photographs disclosed by North Korea showed the latest missile was not a modified version of the Hwasong-14, but a completely new missile.
