S. Korea to Send Senior Diplomat to UNSC Meeting on N. Korea Next Week

South Korea plans to send its Second Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to a UN Security Council(UNSC) meeting set for next Friday to discuss North Korea's nuclear and missile issues.
According to a government source on Friday, the government plans to send Cho on behalf of Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha as Kang will be accompanying President Moon Jae-in on his three-day state visit to China starting on Wednesday.
Though South Korea is not a Security Council member, it was invited to the meeting given its deep involvement in addressing the North's nuclear and missile issues.
Cho is expected to underline the need for thorough implementation of UNSC resolutions sanctioning North Korea and emphasize the importance of establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula in the wake of the North's launch of its Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile last Wednesday.
The ministry-level meeting will be chaired by Japan and will seek ways to denuclearize the peninsula using diplomatic measures and ways to stop Pyongyang from engaging in provocations.
