Report: Some 150 key commanders of the South Korean military held talks at the Defense Ministry on Friday.
At the meeting, Defense Minister Song Young-moo and the generals discussed that North Korea may engage in fresh provocations in order to increase its leverage in negotiations with the U.S.
They agreed that North Korea is faced with growing uncertainty and anxiety within the regime due to strong long-standing international sanctions.
They said if instability within the regime worsens, North Korea may violate the inter-Korean maritime border or launch terrorist or cyber attacks.
Ahead of the PyeongChang Olympics and Paralympics in February, military commanders at the meeting pledged to strengthen defense posture against the North's possible provocations.
Following the meeting, President Moon Jae-in invited the commanders to the top office for a luncheon.
During the gathering the commander in chief called for creating an environment conducive to the proper transfer of the wartime operational control of the joint forces.
He also urged the generals to build up overwhelming defense capabilities against North Korea and prevent it from making any reckless provocations.
