Japanese Media: N. Korean Military Gave Fishing Quota to Fishermen

NHK said a North Korean fishing boat washed up near Hokkaido last month was discovered to be trying to meet the fishing quota assigned by the North Korean military.

The Japanese broadcaster based the report on testimonies from some of the sailors from the boat, which had a metal plate that reads the 854th military unit of the Korean People’s Army.

The Japan Coast Guard was quoted as saying that the vessel belonged to a fishery organization created by the North Korean military and that they were given fishing quotas to meet.

The boat was found on November 28th with ten sailors aboard on the coast of Matsumae Kojima in Hokkaido.

The sailors, who were reported to have stolen electronic home appliances from a building on the Japanese island, are still under the investigation of the Japanese authorities.
