UN Chief Vows to Foster Environment for N. Korea Dialogue

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has vowed his utmost to foster an environment to enable "meaningful, open and constructive" dialogue between North Korea and concerned nations aimed at peacefully resolving the nuclear issue.
Japan's Kyodo News said Saturday the UN chief made this remark while speaking to Japanese reporters at UN headquarters in New York on Friday ahead of his visit to Japan on Wednesday.
Guterres then explained that sending Jeffrey Feltman, under-secretary-general for political affairs, to North Korea was also part of this effort.
He said that dialogue is necessary between Pyongyang and other nations in order to prevent the situation from getting out of control.
Kyodo news interpreted his remark as expressing concern over the confrontation between the North and the U.S. escalating into a military clash.
The UN chief said the ultimate goal of such efforts is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
