S. Korea, Japan Agree to Step up Sanctions on N. Korea

The top diplomats of South Korea and Japan have met in Tokyo for their first official talks.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and her Japanese counterpart Taro Kono on Tuesday reaffirmed their shared goal of seeking a peaceful solution to the North Korean nuclear issue. They also agreed to keep up sanctions and pressure on the North while continuing diplomatic efforts to bring North Korea to the negotiating table.

The two agreed to work together to arrange a three-way summit between the leaders of South Korea, China and Japan.

Minister Kono said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will consider a visit to South Korea on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Kang and Kono were also known to have discussed the 2015 Seoul-Tokyo agreement on the Korean victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery.

Before the talks, Kang told reporters that the purpose of her visit includes explaining the goal and progress of the South Korean Foreign Ministry's task force regarding the 2015 deal.

Kang said she would tell Kono that the task force is scheduled to announce a report this month and that it will not necessarily correspond with the Moon administration’s stance.

Also speaking before the meeting, Kono said the two countries already agreed to faithfully implement the agreement, calling on the South Korean government to follow it through.
