US Blames N. Korea for WannaCry Cyberattack

The United States has officially blamed North Korea for the WannaCry ransomware attack that crippled hospitals, banks and businesses across the world in June.

White House Homeland Security Adviser Thomas Bossert said on Tuesday that after careful investigation, the United States is publicly attributing the massive WannaCry cyberattack to North Korea.

"This was a careless and reckless attack. It affected individuals, industry, governments and the consequences were beyond economic. The computers affected badly in the UK and their health care system put lives at risk not just money. After careful investigation the United States is publicly attributing the massive WannaCry cyber attack to North Korea."

Bossert said at a briefing at the White House that the U.S. is not making this allegation lightly and it does so with evidence and partners.

The security adviser said that he can say with confidence that the attack was ordered by the North Korean regime, citing the detection of collective movement.

The public accusation came just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a new national security strategy.
