'Tillerson Mulls Defense Chiefs' Meeting if N. Korea Provocation Continues'

Japan's Kyodo News said Tuesday that the United States is considering holding a meeting of defense ministers in addition to a foreign ministerial meeting scheduled in Canada next month if North Korea continues its provocations.

Citing a source on U.S.-Japan relations, the report said that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson conveyed this plan to Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono during their meeting held in New York on December 15th.

Tillerson earlier announced that a foreign ministerial meeting will be held in Vancouver on January 16th to demonstrate global solidarity against North Korea's nuclear and missile development.

The meeting will invite nations that fought in the Korean War or supported UN troops. South Korea and Japan were also reported to be attending the event.

According to Kyodo, Tillerson said the foreign ministers' meeting also aims to affirm that countries around the world are taking responsibility for the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

He said that if North Korea continues to launch missiles after the Vancouver gathering, holding another meeting, next time of defense ministers, will be inevitable.
