S. Korea Disagrees with China's "Freeze for Freeze" Proposal

South Korea says it does not agree with China’s view that a so-called "freeze for freeze" agreement can solve the North Korean nuclear issue.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk relayed the government’s stance during a media briefing on Thursday amid speculation Beijing’s proposal may be discussed during possible high-level talks between the two Koreas.
China has proposed South Korea and the U.S. suspend their joint military exercises in return for North Korea suspending its nuclear and missile tests.
The spokesman also dismissed concerns Washington may not be happy with Seoul’s proposal for inter-Korean talks, noting South Korea and the U.S. are closely discussing and coordinating on every issue regarding the North to achieve their joint goal of a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear issue.
He also said the two sides will continue thorough coordination while monitoring the North’s recent moves, including North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s New Year address.
Meanwhile, the spokesman said South Korea and the U.S. are having discussions on the possible postponement of their joint military exercises to avoid them overlapping with the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
