Moon, Trump Agree to Delay Joint Military Exercises during Olympics

President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed not to hold joint military exercises during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea next month.

The presidential office said that the agreement came during a 30-minute telephone conversation between the two leaders on Thursday night.

Moon reportedly told Trump that it would greatly help ensure the success of the Olympics if they delay joint military exercises during the Olympics granted that the North does not make any more provocations.

Moon also said that Seoul will closely consult Washington in the process of inter-Korean dialogue, stressing that such talks will help set the mood for a conversation between the U.S. and North Korea to resolve nuclear issues.

In response, Trump said that "America supports President Moon 100 percent," expressing hope that inter-Korean dialogue will produce good results.

Trump also told Moon that he would send high-level representatives to the Winter Games, including his own family.

That breakthrough came after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un expressed hope in his New Year's Day address that his country might participate in the Olympics.
