S. Korea's Chief Envoy to Six Party Talks Departs for U.S. on Wednesday

South Korea's top nuclear negotiator will visit the United States on Wednesday for talks with U.S. officials.

The Foreign Ministry on Monday said Lee Do-hoon, the chief delegate to the long-stalled six-way nuclear talks, will make a three-day trip to the U.S. to meet his counterpart Joseph Yun.

During his stay, Lee will also meet with National Security Council officials as well as key government officials related to North Korea and its nuclear weapons program.

According to the ministry, Lee will assess the recent shift in relations between the two Koreas and extensively discuss ways to advance South-North ties and to peacefully resolve the North's nuclear crisis.

The South Korean envoy is also expected to explain the results of the high-level inter-Korean talks that will open on Tuesday and discuss response measures with Washington.

Lee's U.S. visit comes on the heels of meetings with his Chinese and Japanese counterparts.
