US Welcomes Inter-Korean Talks on Olympics

The United States has welcomed high-level inter-Korean talks in which North Korea agreed to participate in the Winter Olympics set to open next month in South Korea.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement on Tuesday that Washington welcomed the inter-Korean meeting "aimed at ensuring a safe, secure, and successful" Olympics in PyeongChang.

The spokeswoman said that the U.S. is consulting with South Korean officials to make certain North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics does not violate UN sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons.

Nauert, however, added that President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed last week to continue the campaign of "maximum pressure" on North Korea to get it to give up its nukes.

She said that the U.S. is doing its best to make sure the Olympics will be held successfully and safely and that it will send a high-level delegation to the games.
